Roots Assessment 1
(To follow Lesson 6)

 

Separate children so that each works independently. Give each a sheet of ruled paper, folded in four vertical sections. Dictate the following words, making sure that each child places words in the proper grids (working across the page):

mat

Please wipe your shoes on the mat.

Pam

I have a friend named Pam. (Remind children that names begin with capital letters.)
rap I heard a rap on the door.
can You can do your work well.
tag We can play a game of tag.
fan We can use a fan to move air in the room.
bad Smoke-filled air is bad for our health.
sap Sap is the liquid that carries food to the leaves of a tree.
rag We used a rag to wipe up the spilled milk.
sack A sack is another name for a bag.
Jack

My friend's name is Jack.

pass Sometimes we need to pass out supplies to do our work.
jazz Jazz is a special kind of American music.
lack You cannot do your work if you lack a pencil and paper.
lass Lass is a Scottish word for girl.
vat A vat is a large tub.
zap Lightning may zap a tree.
hat In cold weather, you will want a hat on your head.
quack The little duck went quack.
wax A candle is made from wax.
yam A yam is a kind of sweet potato.
Dan Dan is a nickname for Daniel or Danielle.
nap A nap is a short sleep.
van You can haul things in a van.

Make a copy of the Portfolio Record Sheet for each child. Collect children's papers and assess according to portfolio record. Staple assessment record to child's paper and insert into portfolio.
